Tot School: Letter ‘Rr’

Vito is 28 months old.

Letter R

Vito is currently in his sensitive years and I am taking advantage of this period as he’s really into ALL our activities, positioning himself in his table asking for something to “play”.  So this week, we started with letter R. Why letter R and not A? Well, I decided to follow the RAMFBITG method of introducing letter sounds to Vito. To know why, read about it here.

For Letter R, I have these masterials displayed on top of our shelf.  The objects here all starts with letter R!

Red Rocks

Sensorial activity and colour recognition.  I made him use his hands to colour the rocks.

Brushing of Rocks

Vito enjoyed this better than the rock painting as he doesn’t like his hands get dirty.  He loves playing with the water and the use of a cleaning tool is a good introductory for cleaning an object using a toothbrush or something similar.  Watch the video here for a little inspiration!

Letter ‘Rr’ made of Red Rice

Another sensorial activity mixed with learning letters! This was fun! Both Mavi and Vito enjoy making letters using rice.  They would pile it all up and love the great reveal (of the letter!).

Phonics Sound Swat

Something new in the house and a favourite! Vito still resist learning letters through “formal” activities. Since he’s more into actions (unlike Mavi who loves to sit and read and learn), Vito needs physical movements to get him interested in letter activities.  Vito knows his letter sounds and this is an amazing game to review and practise them. Basically, I would make a sound and he’s going to hit the alphabet card (DIY) that matches the sound.  I would love to use sandpaper letters here but I don’t have one.  The cards are both in big and small letters so he’ll be familiarised with both letters.  We don’t have a fly swatter, so I use our silicone spatula LOL.

Sorting Small and Big Letter R

Simple activity on the fly wherein Vito learned his big and small letter R!  I cut out pieces of paper and wrote the R and r so he can match them to the Melissa & Doug magnetic letter in the sorting tray.  Introduce the letter first, indicating “this is a big R” and “this is a small r”.  Then start the activity by saying that you need to match the letters.DSC_0296

Rainbow Colours

These are extra strips from Rainbow Cloud Crafts and I reused it in our rainbow colour sorting of insect counters. Now this is not just a simple sorting activity, the child has to make sure that the counters must be on top of the strips, forming a line. This twist in sorting activity allows the child to practise his hand-eye coordination and improves concentration.
